What states are you licensed in?

I'm licensed to provide telehealth therapy in New York, Utah, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. As long as you're physically located in one of these states at the time of our session, we can work together via secure video. If you split time between states or are planning a move, we'll talk about what that means for continuity of care during your free consultation.

Do you offer therapy in Spanish?

Accepted Answer

Yes — sessions are available in both English and Spanish, and many clients move fluidly between the two. I have a particular connection with first-generation Latino clients navigating identity, family expectations, and the experience of moving between cultures. Bilingual therapy isn't only about translation; it's about being able to use the language each feeling actually lives in.

What if I'm not sure what's "wrong"?

Most people who reach out can't name it neatly — they just notice that something feels off, or that an old pattern keeps showing up. You don't need a diagnosis or a tidy story to begin. The first few sessions are largely about getting curious together: what you're carrying, when it started, and what shape it takes in your daily life. From there, we shape the work to fit what you actually need.

What do you NOT treat?

My practice is focused on adult therapy for grief, betrayal trauma, anxiety, self-worth, identity, and life transitions. I do not currently provide care for active bipolar disorder, schizophrenia spectrum conditions, or primary personality-disorder treatment — that work calls for specialized teams. If your situation needs a different fit, I'll do my best to point you toward providers who can offer it.

What does a free consultation look like?

It's a 15-minute video call. You tell me what's bringing you in, I tell you a bit about how I work, and we both get a felt sense of whether we're a fit. There's no pressure to commit on the call or after — many people take a day or two to decide. If we're not the right match, I'll happily share names of other therapists who might be.

Do you take insurance, or are you private pay?

Back To Joi is a private-pay practice — I am not in-network with any insurance panels. Standard sessions are $175, with a limited number of sliding-scale spots between $125–$175. If you have out-of-network mental health benefits, I can provide a monthly superbill you submit to your insurer for partial reimbursement.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is a longer conversation — we slow down and map what's bringing you in: the current situation, the history underneath it, and what you'd like to feel different. I'll ask questions, you'll ask questions, and together we'll sketch what the work might focus on for the next several sessions. Nothing is locked in; the plan evolves as we learn what helps.

Yes. I provide telehealth therapy to adults across Utah, including Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and surrounding areas. Sessions are by secure video and available in English or Spanish; you'll need to be physically located in Utah when we meet.

Yes. I offer virtual therapy to adults across Virginia — including Virginia Beach, Richmond, Arlington, and Northern Virginia — by secure video. Bilingual sessions in English and Spanish are available; you'll need to be in Virginia at session time.

Do you work with first-generation Latino adults?

Accepted Answer

Yes — this is one of the populations I have the deepest connection with. Many clients are navigating family expectations, language and cultural in-betweenness, and the weight of being the one who 'made it.' Sessions move between English and Spanish as needed, and there's no need to translate the parts of your experience that only live in one language.

Is EMDR or trauma work a good fit for betrayal trauma?

Often, yes — though the right entry point depends on where you are. Early on, the work is usually about stabilization: sleep, nervous system regulation, and rebuilding a sense of safety in your own body. Once that foundation is steadier, trauma-focused approaches can help process the specific memories and meaning of what happened. We'll talk through pacing in your consultation.

Do you accept insurance?

I'm not in-network with insurance panels, but I provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. Most PPOs reimburse a portion of out-of-network mental health care. Call the member services number on your insurance card and ask about 'out-of-network outpatient mental health' benefits.

How long are sessions?

Standard sessions are 50 minutes, held weekly or biweekly. I generally recommend starting weekly so we can build momentum and a working rapport. We can shift cadence as the work progresses.

What's your cancellation policy?

Accepted Answer

I ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or reschedules. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are billed at the full rate, with care taken for true emergencies. The policy exists to protect the steadiness of the work for both of us.

What do I need technically?

Accepted Answer

A private, quiet space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. I use a HIPAA-aware secure video platform — you don't need to install anything. Headphones help with privacy and focus.
